Knit Blanket Square
About:
This simple square is a relaxing activity for any time of the day! The nice thing about making blocks is that you don’t have to make an entire blanket. Warm Up America and Knit A Square will accept individual blocks (each has their own sizing guidelines) as well as full blankets. Blocks can also easily be combined to make a baby, lap, or adult blanket.
Time: 2.5 hours
Recipient: Children, Senior Citizens, Babies, Cancer Patients, Homeless, Veterans, Orphans, Dementia Patients, Other Illness Patients, Abuse Survivors
Donation Location: Blankets are helpful for all people, so they can be donated just about anywhere. Make sure you contact the location you want to donate your blanket to first, so you know if they are accepting blankets.
Check out national the organization's websites that you would like to donate to before beginning so you can see if they have any color, or other, requirements.

Instructions
Making the Rectangle
- Slip knot onto one needle, cast on stitches until it is desired width. (For reference, I used size 6 needles, worsted weight yarn, and cast on 40 stitches to get 7 inches wide)
- Knit every row until desired length
- Bind off your piece.
- Do this by knitting the first two stitches, then pull the first stitch over the second and off the needle.
- Knit the next stitch so there are two on the needle, then repeat process of pulling back stitch off needle until last stitch. Knit last stitch with the tail, cut tail, pull through, tighten, and tuck tail. NOTE: for Knit a Square they ask that you butterfly the tail. This means that you should cut your tail 20” long, gather it neatly, cut a piece of contrasting yarn, weave it through and tie your gathered tail.
Connecting the Rectangles
- Lay the fronts of the two blocks you want to connect on top of each other (backs on the outside). Cut a long length of yarn and thread your yarn needle and knot the end of the string
- Sew the two blocks together. Sew twice through the first two loops to secure it.
- Secure that last two loops by sewing through them twice. Before tightening the second time through, pull the tail through the stitch you made to knot it.
