Sewn Face Masks
About: Personal protective equipment is important when trying to protect yourself from a disease. Masks are especially important when fighting the spread of COVID-19 and other diseases that travel through respiratory droplets. Wearing a mask keeps your droplets contained to you. Even if you aren’t feeling sick you may be asymptomatic and still able to spread the disease, so it is important to wear a mask when around other people just in case. Additionally, if someone isn't wearing a mask but you are, then you are more protected from their droplets and are less likely to catch a disease from them. This pattern includes two size masks and an adjustable nose piece.

Materials
- Cotton fabric
- Flannel fabric
- Scissors
- Thread
- Elastic (can be a cut t-shirt strip)
- Pipe cleaner
- Big Beads (optional)
Instructions
- Cut 3 pieces 6 inches tall by 9 inches wide (for a smaller mask make the pieces 6 inches by 8 inches). One cotton piece for the front of your mask, a flannel for the center, and a cotton for the back.
- Fold a pipe cleaner in half and twist it, then sew it to the top edge of the right side (pretty side) of the flannel
- Cut two 11 inch long strips of elastic or t-shirt for ear loops (9 inch for smaller mask). Or cut four stips if you'd rather have ties behind your ears than loops.
- Place the back of the mask right side up and then pin the ear loops near the corners.
- Layer the front of the mask on top, wrong side up, and then put the flannel on top right side up.
- Sew around the edges and leave a hole at the bottom.
- Flip the mask inside out
- Pleat the mask three times and pin it in place.
- Sew over the pleats twice to secure them and sew a line across the bottom to close up your hole.
- Add beads to make mask adjustable, or knot the ties to together behind your ears to make the mask snug. You did it!
